Police issue warning over fake £20 notes

So far, officers have seized seven of the counterfeit notes, which officers say can be easily identified because of their poor quality.

The serial number of the notes recovered so far is KC551446.Crime reduction officer Det con Lee Vallois said that the notes did not have a watermark and were printed on thicker than normal paper.

He described the printing as poor.He added: ‘The principal security features in Jersey £20 notes are intended to be verified by sight and touch.

The most reliable method of identifying a counterfeit is to compare it carefully with a note of the same type which is known to be genuine.’Dc Vallois added that Islanders should make checks – 1, Feel the note, which should be crisp and slightly rough in the heavily printed areas.

It should not be limp, waxy or shiny; 2, Check the quality of the printing; it should be sharp, with no hazy edges; 3, Ensure that there is a watermark; 4, Check that the note has a silver thread running through it which appears as a bold continuous line when the note is held up to the light. He added: ‘Clearly, it is very difficult for a busy cashier or shopkeeper to check every note in this way, but if suspicions are aroused for any reason by a particular note then these checks should be carried out.’Anyone who wants more details should ring the crime reduction unit on 612603.
