West Park swimmer dies

A MAN who had a heart attack and suffered hypothermia after wading into the extremely cold sea has died in hospital.

Duarte Lino Velosa Ferriera (45), known to friends as Lino, had been in a coma following the incident last Monday but he died on Friday.

It has emerged that a 14-year-old boy tried to save Mr Ferriera. Marc Carcel found Mr Ferriera face down in the water near La Frégate Café and immediately called for help. Marc had been paddling in the sea with a friend at West Park and had noticed Mr Ferriera swimming nearby.

The teenager, a home-school student who lives at Victoria Place on the Waterfront, said: ‘I was trying to persuade my friend to come into the water and when I turned around I saw the man floating.’
