Top earners

FIVE civil servants in Jersey are each earning up to a quarter of a million pounds a year.

The figures, released by the Chief Minister’s department, show that last year 464 States employees earned more than £70,000, with 141 of them, or nearly a third, being paid more than £70,000 when employer contributions towards pension and social security were factored in.

And with the recent Comptroller and Auditor General report saying that the top echelons of public sector staff are underpaid compared to their UK counterparts or the Island private sector, Assistant Chief Minister Ian Gorst says that the figures may rise. That report prompted the Council of Ministers to promise a review of States pay policy.

It is believed that the top five earners referred to in the report published today, who each received between £230,000 and £250,000, include the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, Deputy Bailiff Michael Birt, and States chief executive Bill Ogley.
