Bishops on a visit from the Congo

TWO bishops from the Democratic Republic of Congo are visiting Jersey to strengthen links with the Island.

The Right Rev Dr Ande Titre Georges from the diocese of Aru is the guest of Grouville Church and the Right Rev Isingoma Kahwa Henri from the diocese of Boga is the guest of St Peter’s Church.

Both bishops are in the Island with their wives, Madame Maturu and Madame Mugisa, for a rest period before attending a conference in Lambeth.

Mr Ande visited Le Rocquier School yesterday and is attending a church service at St Peter La Rocque in Grouville at 9 am followed by a visit to the parish church at 10 am on Sunday.

At 4 pm on Sunday he will join Mr Isingoma to bless the boats at La Rocque Harbour, and any Islanders are welcome. Mr Isingoma is also taking part in the Patronal festival for St Peter that day.

Mr Ande set up his new diocese three years ago and it covers the north-east border near Uganda and Sudan. In the last two years he has built a cathedral and his congregation operate 24 schools and seven medical centres.

The Jersey Congo Trust was set up about eight years ago to provide a link with the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Island. The trust manages the finance of the links.
