How the mighty have fallen

How the mighty have fallen

From Dick Shenton.

CONGRATULATIONS on your interview with Senator-elect Ian Le Marquand (JEP, 18 October). I was enthused by his views on the existing States and I look forward to his appointment to the Council of Ministers. There was honesty about his comments that heralds a new dawn in local politics and a move away from greed to need.

I heard Senator Walker expressing his view about the return of the old guard showing contentment by the electorate of their policies. The facts, however, disprove that view and I have prepared some analysis to show how the Island electorate is changing.

The newcomers had little opportunity to make their mark on the electorate. Ian Le Marquand was already well known, but there were notable exceptions that did well. They should be encouraged to contest the Deputies’ elections and use the next few weeks to introduce themselves to the people.

Jersey will always treasure the community and to earn their trust you have to meet with as many as you can and prove that you are a member who will fight their corner. Respect them for their contribution to Island life and they will respect you.

We need to increase the independent voice in the States Chamber and they can do it. I have prepared charts which show how far the mighty have fallen in the vote. Establishment candidates polled only 28.4 per cent of the vote compared to 17.6 per cent for parties and 54 per cent for independents, including greens. Senator Ozouf had 40 per cent less support than in 2002, Senator Routier had 25 per cent less and Senator Vibert lost his seat. The result of this year’s Senatorial elections Island wide was to change the status quo.

Now we need to change the Council of Ministers to include independent candidates elected by the House to supplant the cosy Establishment dominance. The same applies to the membership of WEB. Let us appoint members like Senator Perchard, who did the right thing but will no doubt be replaced by a silent acquiescent member selected by the council.

In conclusion, can I thank the JEP for publishing my letter and views – it makes an old fellow feel good to be heard.
