States computer system crashes

A STATES-wide communication crash took down e-mails and phone lines and forced hospital staff to communicate through walkie-talkies for six hours this morning.

E-mail and phone systems crashed at about 3 am but were fixed by about 9 am. At one point overnight the hospital was running with just two working phone lines.

The crash did not affect the emergency services, who were operating normally throughout.

States chief executive Bill Ogley said that IT staff had worked through the night to restore the phone and e-mail systems, and that everything was expected to be back to normal early this morning.
