A grand toy sale to help rebuild lives in Kashmir

CHILDREN and parents are being asked to help to raise funds for young students on the other side of the world who urgently need their assistance.

Any unwanted toys, games, DVDs and books for children aged up to 11 are needed for a major sale taking place next month in aid of the rebuilding of a school in Pakistan-administered Kashmir which was destroyed in an earthquake in October 2005.

When the Girls’ Middle School in Mera Bakot was struck by the earthquake, two charities – Jersey Side by Side and the British Red Cross – each pledged to raise £80,000 towards the £160,000 needed to replace it.

Jersey Side by Side have already raised around £40,000 from the two Jersey Evening Post Big Disc Sales, a concert featuring Hayley Westenra, and from the original appeal following the earthquake.

To increase that total, a Grand Toy and Children’s Book Sale is due to take place in St Martin’s Public Hall on Saturday 7 March between 10 am and 4 pm. Information about the sale is obtainable on 743076 or by e-mail on fortrst@yahoo.co.uk.
