Stabbing trial: Court verdict expected today

Scaffolder Gerard Eamon Maguire (49), who denies the charges, yesterday suggested that Shaun Patrick Howard was claiming to have been stabbed by the defendant to prevent himself from facing police action after instigating the fight or in a bid to claim compensation.

Prior to yesterday’s hearing, commissioner Sir Michael Birt, presiding, took the incredibly rare step of ordering the court to return on Saturday morning.

This morning, Sir Michael was due to give his summary and directions to the jury before they begin their deliberations, with a verdict expected to be delivered later today.
