Robert James Dean Brown (29), of Bagatelle Lane, St Saviour, gave a reading of more than twice the drink-drive limit.
The Magistrate’s Court heard that the first police officer on the scene could not wake him.
When he blew into the intoximeter at police headquarters he gave a reading of 86 mcg of alcohol in 100 ml of breath. The legal limit is 35 mcg.
Outlining the case, Centenier Peter Garrett said that on the night of 23 February a member of the public went to police headquarters to report that a man who appeared drunk was in a red Ford Fiesta parked in front of the roll-shutter doors at the garage.
When the first officer approached the car, she saw that he was sitting in the driver’s seat.
‘The keys were in the ignition and the radio was on.
‘He was slumped over and his upper body was on the steering wheel,’ said the honorary police officer.
The Centenier said that the States police officer could not wake him and he smelt strong intoxicants. ‘She shook him by the shoulder and he appeared drunk but he did not respond,’ he said.
The court heard that two male colleagues, a sergeant and an inspector, arrived and the defendant was eventually arrested at 1.30 am.
Advocate Jane Grace, defending, said that the defendant was sorry for his actions. She said that he had been drinking in town earlier.
She said that when he went home he had a row with his girlfriend and had driven the short distance from his home to the garage to get cigarettes.
Brown admitted a charge of being in charge of a vehicle while over the drink-drive limit.
