Man who admitted harassing woman is bound over

Jonathan Anthony Nolan (33), of Patriotic Street, harassed the woman between 17 September and 4 October last year, following her in the street and shouting abuse.

He also admitted sending abusive text or social media messages and going to her place of work, where he was witnessed swearing and shouting abuse.

However, as nothing else had happened in the six months since the offence was committed, the Assistant Magistrate, Peter Harris said that he was prepared to deal with the matter by way of a binding-over order.

Police legal adviser Advocate Darry Robinson said that on Sunday 17 September the defendant let himself into the premises he had been sharing with the woman.

The lawyer said that the defendant and the complainant were in the process of splitting up and that Nolan had gone to the property to get some clothing.

The victim had been out the night before and a male friend had stayed at her home. The defendant went into the bedroom to get an item of clothing and found the man.

‘This caused him to be upset and angry, and throughout the rest of the day he sent a barrage of Facebook messages,’ said Advocate Robinson.

The lawyer said that the defendant went to her workplace on 4 October and a work colleague witnessed him harassing her. Advocate Sarah Dale, defending, said that this was out of character and Nolan was upset and angry at the time.

Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris said: ‘Whatever your sense of grievance, that was not an excuse for how you behaved.’
