‘All cars in Jersey should be electric’

‘All cars in Jersey should be electric’

There are currently 17 public electric-vehicle charging points, including two each in Minden Place, Green Street and Patriotic Street car parks, while Sand Street has three and Pier Road eight.

Planning permission has been granted for seven others and Assistant Treasury Minister Lindsay Ash has revealed plans to propose a car tax in the future, as electric cars grow in number.

His comments follow the release of figures from Jersey Electricity last month, which showed that the number of ‘pure’ electric vehicles had risen by 189 to 572 during the past 12 months, with a steeper rise in the number of hybrid vehicles – almost 1,000 are now registered, up from 271 in October 2018.

Deputy Ash said: ‘There is no reason for Jersey not to be an all-electric-car Island.

‘There will need to be more infrastructure for it to happen so that will mean that it is inevitable a car tax will arrive at some point; that is something I would look to bring forward.

‘Roads will still need maintaining, along with things like signs, so there will need to be a fund because money won’t be raised from fuel duty.’
