Golden Boot not the defining moment of Kane’s England career

Harry Kane will collect his World Cup Golden Boot in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley but the England captain refuses to believe he has reached his peak.

The Tottenham striker is hardly under-selling the occasion or the achievement, agreeing to wear specially made footwear in the same dazzling colour scheme for the Nations League clash against Spain, but he is treating it as a milestone rather than the culmination.

“I think I could have done better at the World Cup if I’m perfectly honest,” was his assessment.

“It was great, I scored some good goals and important goals but there was stuff I could have done better as well…certain finishes I could have done better, certain movements. It’s all part of a learning curve.

“To win the Golden Boot at the World Cup and feel like I could have done better is exciting. There’s a lot of improvement (to go) and I’m at a high level already.”

As for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the two generation-defining talents who Kane has explicitly measured himself against in the past, he still defers.

“I think it’s hard to compare with those two,” he said.

“I’ve said before those two have set the standard in football over the last 10 or so years. For players like myself and others they are the heights we all want to reach, so to do that in the World Cup and finish top scorer was something I’m extremely proud of.

“But I don’t think I’m up there with them yet. That’s my aim, I aim to improve.”

Kane’s eye-catching boots, which have already been trailed on social media, are at odds with his
typically unflashy manner but he insists it is a one-time thing.

“Nike have been kind enough to make me a pair of golden boots which I’m going to wear just for tomorrow’s game,” he explained.

“It’s very nice but I guess I’ll have to score a goal to make it worthwhile. They could be pink or could be black, it doesn’t matter to me, for me it’s a pair of boots.”
